Location:  Port Moody Station Museum 2734 Murray Street Port Moody

The theme is ‘Game Creation’ and students will make more than just video games! At the UME Game Design Camp, participants will learn to make awesome video games using Unity software,  play and design outdoor games, as well as trying new games that connect past and present. What do morse code and computer code have in common?  We will find out! Each day will include outdoor games, play and exploration all infused with game design theory and practice!

  • outdoor game play and design
  • board games
  • card games
  • game art creation
  • board game and player piece design
  • historic games, scavenger hunts and  museum tour
  • morse code games
  • Video game play, evaluate and design
  • Develop game design skills in Unity, the software that powers Pokemon Go, Mario Run and other top games!
  • Mini-game challenges in Unity
  • Outdoor play and fun…it’s summer time after all!

This camp is great for first time game designers, as well as those with technical experience.

At UME we emphasize fun, creativity and foster a positive attitude to learning. We teach each child a process to break down their ideas through computational thinking and problem solving. Through guidance we allow each child to make mistakes, and discover their own path to creating, testing and problem solving, while they design their own games!  For students who have already created video games with Unity or Scratch, they will take a deeper dive into art sound effects, music, character and art customization and an introduction to programming.    We want every child to have fun! We work with each student to ensure they are challenged appropriately and utilizing their own interests and skills, while learning new ones!

For a balance of activities, we play outdoors, explore the trails, playground and spray park at Rocky Point. Please bring a lunch, snacks and water every day. We will let you know when swimsuits (for water park) are needed.

Join us on this fun summer game-making adventure!

Our Approach:

Children are filled with ideas and passion for play.  When they learn to break down their” big ideas” into components or ‘blocks’ also reinforces computational thinking, which is a precursor to coding.   We hope to kids to keep on exploring, and continue engaging with technology, while “playing to learn”!

At UME We aim to make this learning process as fun as possible, using positive reinforcement, collaboration, and game play to keep kids motivated, engaged and excited about learning.

This camp is a chance to explore the process of digital design – and is perfect for beginners and ‘tech saavy’ kids.   Students will learn to use Unity3D in the game design learning environment complete with custom tools, game sprites and assets. Each participant will design and make their own game idea- see for yourself in our student arcade – no game is ever alike!

** We provide all hardware and software. ***

Participants will receive instructions on how to download Unity software at home, and receive a zipfile of their game after the camp.  They will be able to continue making and playing games at home using Unity, a professional level software!
